Summary
Methodical progress of specular microscopy allows to follow up the corneal endothelium after penetrating keratoplasty, using fresh or short time preserved donor material.
In a prospective study endothelial photographs of the center of the donor cornea were taken with the contact specular microscope prior to surgery.
Using fresh or short-time-stored donor material an identical cell loss of about 20–25 per cent was seen 6 month after the penetrating keratoplasty.
In a retrospective study also no significant differences were found with both methods.
Also in regard of functional and clinical results no differences were observed with either method.
