Zusammenfassung
Nach Angaben der WHO leiden mehr als 60% der sterbenden Krebspatienten an Schmerzen [7]. Jedes Jahr wird bei beinahe 6 Mio. neuen Patienten Krebs diagnostiziert, und mehr als 4 Mio. sterben daran. Viele dieser Patienten sind oft arm, alleine, mangelhaft durch ihre Angehörigen betreut oder auch überbehütet, in der Hoffnung, die Gesundheit durch die Konsultation vieler Spezialisten oder die Inanspruchnahme sinnloser Therapien wiederzuerlangen. In Anbetracht dieser Probleme erstellten wir 1977 eine Continuing Care Unit (CCU), innerhalb des Schmerzbehandlungsdienstes des National Cancer Institute (NCI) von Mailand. Seit 1981 werden die Aktivitäten der CCU durch ein Heimpflegeprogramm (HCP = Home Care Program) ergänzt; dadurch wird versucht, die Lücke zu füllen, die oft entsteht, wenn Krebspatienten das Spital verlassen.
