Peritidal Origin of Cambrian Carbonates in Northwest Spain

Abstract

The Láncara Formation, a unit composed up of carbonates, ranging in age from Early to Middle Cambrian, is well exposed in the Cantabrian zone (northwest Spain). It generally forms the sole of several thrust sheets emplaced by a general décollement of the Paleozoic stratigraphic sequence. Where a complete Cambrian succession exists, the Láncara Formation overlies a sequence of coarse-grained sandstones and interbedded shales (Herrería Formation) of Early Cambrian age, and is overlain by another sandstone-shale formation ranging in age from Middle to Late Cambrian (Oville Formation).
