Abstract
The Middle Member of the Wood Canyon Formation (Precambrian) is well exposed in the Basin-and-Range Province of eastern California and western Nevada over an area of approximately 36,000 sq km (Stewart, 1970) and ranges in thickness from 150 to 550 meters. Selected outcrops (Fig. 20-1; Table 20-1) of this member show a variety of sedimentary structures and sedimentary sequences indicating that the Wood Canyon is an intertidalite (cf. Klein, 1971, 1972a, 1972b). The Upper Member (Cambrian) and the Lower Member (Precambrian) of the Wood Canyon also have features indicating a tidal depositional history. The Wood Canyon is overlain by the tidalites of the Cambrian Zabriskie Quartzite (Barnes and Klein, Chapter 19) and is underlain by the Precambrian Sterling Quartzite (Fig. 20-2).
