What Is the Internet?

Abstract

No other technology has influenced modern civilization as rapidly as the Internet. In only 5 years, the number of people connecting to the Internet has increased from 1 million in 1992 to over 16 million in 1997 worldwide1; A November 2000 study by NUA (www.nua.ie) Internet surveys estimates 167 million users in Canada and the United States alone.2 In many areas of the world today, people with access to the Internet outnumber those who do not have access. The Internet affects each of us in some way each day. For surgeons to fully utilize the potential of the Internet, it is important first to address the simple question, What is the Internet?
