Abstract
One of the most spectacular applications of tensor calculus in the field of continuum mechanics is the general theory of shells. To study it, we shall need some knowledge of the theory of curved surfaces and we shall now embark upon this mathematical subject, keeping in mind the application we later want to make of it.
