Abstract
The diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is an indication for operative treatment. The pyloromyotomy, first performed by Ramstedt in 1911, remains the procedure of choice. Prolonged and uncertain conservative treatment should be attempted only in mild cases. Prematurity does not contraindicate surgery.
