Abstract
Besides endoscopic treatment methods (sclerotherapy), trials of drug therapy, and the various portosystemic shunts, there are a number of surgical treatments for esophageal varices that fall under the heading of ligation procedures. To an extent these operations compete with the other treatment methods, but usually they are employed only after the other methods have failed, or for highly selected cases.
