Abstract

Selective gastric vagotomy (SGV; synonym: selective total gastric vagotomy, STV) includes the total parasympathetic denervation of the stomach, leaving the vagal innervation of the liver, bile ducts, pancreas, duodenum, colon, etc. intact. The motility of the stomach is altered by SGV as by truncal vagotomy. Therefore, SGV always has to be combined with a drainage procedure (pyloroplasty, gastroduodenostomy, or gastrojejunostomy, see pp. 35, 50, 228).
