Abstract

Endoscopic measures have curtailed the need for open surgical procedures. The capabilities of endoscopic measures for the palliation of inoperable, stenosing tumors of the distal esophagus and proximal stomach are as follows (Fig. 12.1):
  1. a)

    alimentation,

  2. b)

    dilatation,

  3. c)
    reduction of tumor size by
    • diathermy,

    • laser,

    • instillation of cytostatic drugs and sclerosing agents,

  4. d)

    placement of an endoesophageal tube,

  5. e)

    percutaneous gastrostomy,

  6. f)

    intubation for tracheoesophageal fistula.
