Abstract
Most carcinomas of the gastric cardia are adenocarcinomas that originate in the glands of the cardia mucosa and exhibit a growth pattern similar to carcinomas of the fundus. They are distinct from squamous cell carcinomas of the distal esophagus that invade the cardia from above. A special type of adenocarcinoma is that which occurs in the columnar-lined esophagus; it is considered a late sequela of chronic reflux disease. This type of tumor arises in the columnar epithelium of the esophagus and is more properly assigned to the class of distal esophageal tumors.
