Abstract

In this chapter we shall review some concepts from graph theory and discrete geometry which are useful in picture processing. The description of pictures in terms of graphs is quite natural and it has been done, explicitly or implicitly, in most of the literature on pictorial pattern recognition and scene analysis. Unfortunately there is wide variability in graph terminology among various users and part of the purpose of the review is to give the definitions for the terms which we will be using later on.
