Summary
Plane waves in one-dimensional inelastic bodies of soil are investigated. The dynamic stress-strain diagram of two types of soil, sand and gravel, is determined in an oedometer operated dynamically. A theory is developed for the calculation of plane waves in any kind of non-linear, inelastic material with heterogeneities and any type of reflective surfaces. Examples show the great influence of inelasticity on the propagation and attenuation of stress waves. Wave propagation experiments were conducted, and the results are compared to the theoretical findings.
