Abstract

By far, the most common causes of small bowel obstruction (SBO) are postoperative adhesions and hernias. Other rarer etiologies are mechanical (bolus, malignant or inflammatory). Irreducible hernias and the differential diagnosis of early postoperative SBO versus ileus are discussed separately in chapters 18 and 34, respectively. Mention will be made below of SBO in the “virgin” abdomen. The bulk of this chapter is devoted to adhesive SBO.
