Abstract
The possibilities for applying reflectance spectroscopy in industry and research are practically unlimited, and a great number of examples can be found in the literature in which the method has been applied successfully. Even so, however, all the advantages that the method offers have not been fully realized. It is not the goal of this book to enumerate or even give examples of all the possible applications. We would like to limit ourselves to such problems that cannot be solved by other methods, or are difficult to solve. In this way, not only can the applications and importance of reflectance spectroscopy be shown, but it can be compared with spectroscopic transmission methods. Moreover, these examples can provide an incentive for applying the method to other problems which are difficult to solve.

That the additivity is not exactly within the limits of error can be explained by the differences in the scattering coefficients of both components and of the mixture. This occurs because the mixture was additionally ground whereas the pure components were mixed only by lengthy shaking in a test-tube.

It is difficult to understand that in some papers [cf. e.g. Griffiths, T. R.: Anal. Chem. 35, 1077 (1963)] it is assumed and verified experimentally that the extinction, log(1/R∞), is linearly proportional to concentration.

Attempts have been made to measure the differential extinctions in transmission, obtained when the paper was soaked in paraffin oil, cut into narrow strips, and the transmittance measured separately for each strip [see, e.g. Block, R. J.: Science 108, 608 (1948).
