Recent Carbonate Sedimentation in the Gnadensee (Lake Constance), Germany

Recent Developments in Carbonate Sedimentology in Central Europe

Abstract

The sediments of the Gnadensee are subdivided according to grain size into three zones parallel to the shore line: littoral, lake slope, and lake bottom. The mean grain size decreases gradually from the shore towards the middle of the lake. Carbonates are chief constituents of the sediments, except for those samples taken from the near-shore-area. The carbonates consist of calcite, dolomite, and aragonite. The dolomite is detrital-clastic and the aragonite biogenic-clastic in origin. Calcite is

  1. 1.

    detrital-clastic like the dolomite, and

  2. 2.

calcite crystallized in situ through chemical-biogenic processes.

The precipitation of calcite in the lake is due to numerous carbonate-producing plants, such as macrophytae (schizophyceae), microphytae (blue-green algae). The formation of onkoids, produced by blue-green algae, is discussed in detail. Annual biogenic production of carbonates is ten times larger than detrital-clastic production.
