Exceptionally High Strontium Concentrations in Fresh Water Onkolites and Mollusk Shells of Lake Constance

Recent Developments in Carbonate Sedimentology in Central Europe

Abstract

Calcitic onkolites and aragonitic shells of Lake Constance show unusually high Sr/Ca-ratios ranging from 0.89 to 3.38; mean values for algal calcite are 1.06, for Gastropods 1.52, and for Pelecypods 2.19. For mollusks, most of these ratios fall into the range of marine environment.

The high Sr/Ca-ratios in the carbonate material can be explained by the high Sr/Ca-ratio of Lake Constance water derived mainly from the Alpenrhein. In the Alpenrhein, ratios even higher than in sea water were observed at low water levels.

The distribution coefficient for Strontium between water and organic calcium carbonate ranges from 0.177 in calcite algal material (with very low amounts of aragonite) to 0.25 in Gastropods and 0.36 in Pelecypods Similar coefficients for mollusks are known from marine shells. Our observations clearly demonstrate that Sr-contents and Sr/Ca-ratios of organic carbonates are not necessarily indicators of salinity but of the Sr/Ca-ratio in the depositional environment.
