Personality and aging: Modes of coping and the meaning of stress

  • Chapter
Psychologie der Lebensalter

Abstract

Personality and aging have been two aspects of Thomae’s main field of scientific interest, and these will be discussed in this presentation. In the introduction, we approach this issue from a specific point of view, coping and aging, but in the concluding section, we will enlarge the discussion to cover personality and aging in general. The limitations set by a short chapter do not allow us to review the personality and aging literature as a whole. The interested reader is referred to excellent, earlier reviews by Neugarten (34), Thomae (47, 51) Bengtson et al (2), and Kogan (23), as well as a forthcoming review by Ruth and Coleman (39).
