Abstract
After several months of agonizing over the subject matter of my presentation today I finally decided to depart from my usual approach to the topic of drug self-administration experiments in laboratory animals. This departure was prompted by several factors: 1. a number of review articles have been written in recent years which systematically cover much of the research in this area (Schuster and Thompson, 1969; Schuster, 1970; Schuster and Johanson, 1972)), 2. the presence of a number of investigators in this symposia who will be presenting various aspects of this research in greater detail than would be possible in the time alloted to me. Because of this I have chosen to be a bit presumptious and to share with you my reflections on some of the assumptions, problems and strengths of this research. In no sense will I attempt to systematically cover the literature, but rather, I have selected a few main issues which I feel to be of importance.
