Abstract
Sperm migration, fertilization and implantation of the ovum takes place in the uterus, an environment that is controlled by sex hormones. The uterus is a target organ for these hormones. The ovary provides not only the oocytes, but also estrogens and gestagens in a sequence that warrants optimal conditions of this environment. The ovary itself is subject to control mechanisms resulting from programmed interaction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian system. It induces a sequence of biochemical processes in the uterus via steroid hormones before and after ovulation, which is triggered by LH release from the pituitary gland. These create favorable conditions for sperm migration and storage in the cervix, for sperm transport through the uterine cavity into the oviducts, for the fertilization process that takes place in the ampulla of the tube, and for the early development and implantation of the ovum. The changes in the uterine environment are synchronized in a very precise way with the biochemical events taking place in the developing ovum, thus providing optimal conditions that change from one day to another and from one topographical area of the uterus to another (i.e., cervix, oviduct, corpus uteri) during this critical time period [2, 4, 13].
