Purification, Characterization, and Structural Studies of Proteinase Inhibitors from Boar Seminal Plasma and Boar Spermatozoa

Abstract

Proteinase inhibitor activities were observed in male accessory glands and in seminal fluids of several mammalian and other animal species including man [1-8]. The synthesis and the secretion of the inhibitors in the seminal vesicles is probably under hormonal control [1]. Fertilization of the ovum can be prevented by treatment of capacitated sperm with seminal plasma trypsin inhibitors [9]which are known to be inhibitors of the sperm trypsin-like proteinase acrosin[5, 10]. Acrosin has been found to be responsible for the lysis of the inner egg membrane (zona pellucida) Fig. 1.
