Abstract

About 10 years ago Laurell and Eriksson described the α1antitrypsin deficiency in man and established an association between homozygous α1 antitrypsin deficiency and obstructive emphysema of the lung [1]. These discoveries have stimulated many investigators to examine the possible role of proteolytic enzymes in the development of emphysema.
