Abstract

Diverticular disease of the colon was believed to be a rare condition in Greece until 1963 (Zeugolatis et al., 1963). However, our personal experience was contrary to this belief. This led us to study the barium enemas of 4,000 patients of various professions. All these patients presented gastrointestinal symptoms and had undergone laboratory tests and full radiological and endoscopic examination of the bowel.
