Raman Scattering from Excited States with Picosecond Lifetimes

Abstract

If σ(λ) is the absorption cross section of an excited* ← ground state transition and σ*(λ) that of an higher excited ← excited state* transition, both at λlaser, then the latter becomes observable if:
$$ \frac{{\sigma \left( {{\text{ }}\lambda } \right)}} {{\sigma \left( \lambda \right) + \sigma *\left( \lambda \right)}}N_p^{SN} = N\frac{1} {{\tau *}} $$

where N p SN is the number of photons/sec required to saturate the excited state* with a lifetime τ* and N is the number of absorbing species in the trace of the laser beam.
