New Results on the Rapid Dynamics of Vibrational Modes of Organic Molecules in Liquid and Solid Solutions
The population lifetimes of vibrational modes in the condensed phases are exceedingly short. With picosecond light pulses we are now in the position to measure directly these short time constants and obtain new information on the vibrational dynamics of polyatomic molecules. In our experimental investigations an excess population in certain vibrational modes is generated by an infrared pulse of 5 ps duration and a bandwidth of approximately 10 cm-1. Tunable infrared pulses are produced in a single-path parametric system consisting of two or three LiNbO3 crystals.
