Equilibrium and Stability of a Nonrotating Flat Gravitating Layer
In the present chapter which essentially has an introductory purpose we shall restrict ourselves when investigating stability to the simplest model— that of a nonrotating flat layer. This model will permit us a rather detailed study of the properties of two important instabilities of gravitating systems: Jeans and anisotropic (see Introduction). More realistic models of flattened gravitating systems are also subject to these instabilities, provided that similar conditions hold. A somewhat more complicated rotating layer model will be considered later (see Chapter V).
