Abstract
The theory of gravitational stability has a history rich in events associated with the names of Laplace, Kovalevskaya, Maxwell, Lyapunov and Poincaré. These authors have created a fundamental and mathematically elegant theory of figures of equilibrium and stability of different geometrical shapes of incompressible fluid (sphere, ellipsoid, cylinder, ring, etc.). The results of their research have been summarized in a large number of reviews and monographs [15, 64, 77, 127]. Most recently, this work has been continued by Chandrasekhar and his co-workers, who have somewhat amplified and, above all, systematized the old results [148].
