Photosynthesis in Developing Plant Canopies

Abstract

All biologically useful energy derives ultimately from that stored in the process of photosynthesis. On land this takes place in leaves and stems of plants arranged in canopies of highly variable structure and density. Parameters of the physical environment that affect photosynthesis (radiation flux density in the waveband 4000–7000 Å; air temperature, total radiation, water-vapor content of the air, and air speed, which together affect leaf temperature; and carbon dioxide content of the air) may vary considerably throughout the total space occupied by a particular plant canopy. Furthermore, the physiological—biochemical parameters of leaf tissue which govern photosynthetic capacity will also vary throughout the canopy, depending on the age and environmental history of component leaves.
