Abstract

Several compounds, which encompass a number of fibrate molecules and analogues, have been classified as peroxisome proliferators. Many of these fibrates, with hypolipemic action, are employed as human drugs in the prevention of arteriosclerosis [2]. In rodents, peroxisome proliferators produce a pleiotropic response, including hepatomegaly and an increase in the number of peroxisomes and in the activity of several enzymes. These enzymes are primarily located in the peroxisomes, particularly those of the long chain fatty acid β-oxidation system [2].
