Abstract
The “chronic irritation theory” of cancerigenesis proposed by Virchow around the middle of the past century forms the scientific basis for the often-repeated claim that the inhalation of nonspecific irritative air pollutants, especially those encountered in certain industries and occupations, represents a significant cause of cancers of the respiratory system.
