Abstract
Historically the topical application of therapeutic agents to the skin dates back to ancient Babylonian and Egyptian medicine. The widespread scientific investigations leading to our current concepts of the physiology of percutaneous absorption, however, are of recent origin. Detailed studies of the subject have extended its implications far beyond the confines of dermatologie therapy and into innumerable branches of medicine, particularly those of pharmacology, toxicology, forensic medicine, and industrial health.
