Abstract

The first stage of any selective laser photoprocess is the selective absorption of one or several laser photons by a desired atom or molecule (in the case of intermolecular selectivity) or by a molecular vibration or functional group (in the case of intramolecular selectivity). In other words, the rate of laser photoexcitation of A (molecules, bonds, etc.) must be much higher than that for the rest, designated B. It is possible to define the magnitude of the photoexcitation selectivity (sometimes called radiative selectivity) as the ratio of the probability of exciting A to a state with the required energy Eexc to the probability of finding B in a state with the same energy:

$$S_{rad} (A/B) = {{P_A (E_{exc} )} \over {P_B (E_{exc} )}}.$$
