Noise Effects in the Locking of Supermodes (Statistical Effects in Laser Modelocking)

Abstract

The Adler equation of oscillator-locking [1] supplemented by noise [2] has been the subject of numerous studies. It describes the behavior of the phase of a single-mode oscillator. We present briefly the analysis of locking and noise in a multimode system, a passively modelocked laser oscillator and show that the Adler equation results for the phase of the modelocked pulse when its timing is controlled by an external drive. The analysis is of interest in its own right because it makes use of expansions in terms of properly defined eigenfunctions-- a method applicable to systems with a large number of degrees of freedom.
