Abstract
Lyme disease (neuroborreliosis) is a tick-borne infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. It is initially characterized by a typical rash at the site of the tick bite (erythema migrans) and “finlike” or “meningitis-like” symptoms (stage I). This may be followed by frank meningitis, cranial or peripheral neuritis, carditis, and migratory musculoskeletal pain (stage II). Months to years later, intermittent or chronic arthritis or chronic neurological and dermatological abnormalities may develop (stage III).
