Zusammenfassung
Wenn man die letzten 60 Jahre überblickt, so mutet es erstaunlich an, daß der erste experimentelle Anhaltspunkt dafür, daß das Aneurin (Vitamin B1) eine Rolle im Erregungsprozeß peripherer Nerven spielen könnte, erst im Jahr 1938 gefunden wurde. Dies ist deswegen so merkwürdig, weil schon in den allerersten Arbeiten von Eijkman (1897) und Grijns (1901) die Beziehung zwischen dem Mangel eines wesentlichen Faktors in der Nahrung (der Begriff des „Vitamins“ existierte ja damals noch gar nicht!) und dem Auftreten schwerer Störungen im gesamten peripheren Nervensystem — Beri-Beri — ganz deutlich aufgezeigt worden war. Eijkman hatte von einem „antineuritischen Prinzip“ gesprochen, dessen Abwesenheit in der Nahrung zu Polyneuritis (allgemeine Nervenentzündung) und zu der als Beri-Beri im Osten bei den reisessenden Völkern längst bekannten, verheerenden Krankheit führt. Zwei wichtige Grundsätze hatte er schon damals erkannt: 1. Das antineuritische Prinzip kann vom tierischen Körper nicht synthetisiert werden. Es kommt nur in den Pflanzen vor, fehlt aber im polierten Reis. 2. Es findet täglich ein bestimmter Verbrauch dieses Faktors innerhalb des Körpers statt, der zu einem „Nachschub- Bedarf“ führt. Wird dieser Bedarf nicht voll befriedigt, so entstehen früher oder später die Mangelerscheinungen und es entwickelt sich Beri-Beri.
