Kinetic and spectrophotometric investigation of the mechanism of α-chymotrypsin action

  • Conference paper

Abstract

One of the fundamental areas of biochemistry is the mechanism of enzyme action. This problem in catalysis may be stated as: “How does a protein catalyze an organic reaction ?” Although no definitive answer has been given for any enzyme, sufficient progress toward this goal has been made to justify the present conference, and the future portends great advances in this area. The study of enzymatic reaction mechanisms offers the possibility of learning one of life’s secrets by the application of chemical principles, and also the possibility of enhancing chemical ideas from learning what the enzyme can do which the lowly chemist cannot.
