The synthesis of ADP and ATP via the oxidation of quinol phosphates

Abstract

The detailed mechanism by which substrate oxidation can be linked to the synthesis of ATP, from ADP and inorganic phosphate, presents a challenge in both chemistry and biochemistry1. In recent years evidence has accumulated to suggest that benzoquinone derivatives, for example coenzyme Q2 and/or naphthaquinone derivatives related to vitamin K3, play an important role in the in vivo transfer of phosphate during oxido-reduction.
