Zusammenfassung
Das Wesentliche der als Wachstum bezeichneten Vorgänge kann von Fall zu Fall etwas ganz verschiedenes sein. In erster Linie erwartet man von einem Wachstumsprozeß, daß er mit einer Längen- oder Dickenzunahme, also einer Volumenvergrößerung des betreffenden Individuums oder Organs verbunden ist. Und die Volumenvergrößerung ist beim Wachstum irreversibel, oder doch jedenfalls nicht leicht, höchstens bei Vorgängen mehr oder weniger pathologischer Natur umkehrbar. Die bloße Wasseraufnahme in die Vakuole wird man also nicht schon als einen Wachstumsprozeß bezeichnen, wohl aber eine Wasseraufnahme, die mit irreversiblen Veränderungen des Plasmas oder der Zellwand verknüpft ist; wobei wieder vorausgesetzt wird, daß zu diesen Prozessen die Lebenstätigkeit der Zelle notwendig ist. Ein Trockensubstanzzuwachs ist mit dem Wachstum nicht notwendig verbunden. Wir kennen sogar Fälle, in denen starkes Wachstum mit einer Verminderung der Trockensubstanz parallel geht. Junge Keimpflanzen können selbst dann noch ein geringeres Trockengewicht aufweisen als vor der Keimung, wenn sie ihr Volumen bereits um das 1 Of ache erhöht haben. Dagegen ist das Wachstum zumeist mit einer Zunahme der Wandsubstanz verknüpft; aber auch das ist nicht unbedingt notwendig.
