Abstract
It is important to adopt a definite philosophical attitude towards ligamentous reconstruction of the knee. In initiating the concept of a synthetic ligament, one’s mentality must also be synchronized with the accompanying concept of “failure.” If all repairs of acute ligamentous tears turned out well, one would not encounter failure and, therefore, one would not need to consider developing a prosthetic ligament. Likewise, if all reconstructions of the ligamentous instabilities of the knee utilizing autogenous structures turned out well, one would not encounter failure and, therefore, one would not need to consider developing a synthetic ligament.
