Hauptgegenstand der Chemie ist die Erforschung der stofflichen Umwandlungen. Dies ist nicht möglich ohne ausreichende Kenntnis der stofflichen Zustände. Wir schicken daher den fünf Hauptkapiteln dieses Buches, chemische Thermodynamik und Gleichgewichtslehre (Kap. II), Elektrochemie (Kap. III), chemische Kinetik (Kap. IV), Aufbau der Materie (Kap. V) und Quantentheorie (Kap. VI), ein Kapitel über die stofflichen Zustände voraus.
