Zusammenfassung

Die Lepra ist eine chronisch verlaufende Infektionskrankheit von relativ geringer Ansteckungsfähigkeit, als deren Erreger das von G.A. Hansen im Jahre 1874 entdeckte Mycobacterium leprae angesehen wird. Als Allgemeinerkrankung befällt sie vorwiegend die Haut und die peripheren Nerven mit mannigfachen Komplikationen, die oft langes Siechtum und Invalidität zur Folge haben. Bei der Vielfältigkeit des klinischen Erscheinungsbildes unterscheidet man hauptsächlich zwischen der malignen lepromatösen Form, die mit starkem Bakterienbefall einhergeht, und der benignen vorwiegend bakterienarmen tuberkuloiden Lepra. Charakteristisch ist die oft sich über Jahre erstreckende Inkubationszeit.
