The genetics of tetrapolar incompatibility

  • Chapter

Abstract

In the tetrapolar Basidiomycetes, incompatibility is observed when two haploid, homokaryotic mycelia meet each other. The two mycelia will either react to form a dikaryotic mycelium, composed largely of binucleate cells, which is capable of forming a fruit body under suitable conditions, when they are said to be fully compatible, or they will not. The products of the latter, or incompatible, reaction are of several kinds and will be discussed in a moment. In the compatible reaction, the dikaryon is established as a result of the migration of nuclei through preformed hyphae (Buller, 1931; Snider, 1963). In the majority of forms, it appears as new growth from such hyphae. The dikaryon is characterized by altered branching patterns, the possession of a clamp connection at each cross wall, its genetical properties as a special kind of heterokaryon, and its ability to form fruit bodies in which meiosis takes place.
