Abstract
The incompatibility system in fungi is obviously of great interest to the geneticist in its own right. What is its genetical architecture? How does it function? How has it evolved? How efficient is it, and what are the consequences of its breakdown? As this symposium has shown us, answers are emerging to some of these questions. And as they emerge, they are showing us how studies of the incompatibility system can throw light on matters and mechanisms of even broader genetical and biological interest.
