The Use of Hypnosis in Exhibitionism

Abstract

Amongst the various types of abnormal sexual behaviour being studied at this Institute, exhibitionism is one for which the controversy over etiology is matched by the variety of treatment and uncertainty of prognosis. It is often amongst the most distressing of conditions, both to its perpetrator and the unfortunate object of the act. Its abhorence by society in general is a reflection of the lack of understanding of its origins and the anger engendered by its harmful effects on innocent parties, particularly when these are children or young persons. This lack of understanding and the emotions aroused in others can lead to unfortunate consequences for the subject of the perversion, who may be otherwise quite normal and blameless in his life. The punishment which is frequently meted out in the form of prison sentences may often cause an increase in the underlying anxiety and guilt leading to increased chances of recurrence.
