Abstract
Modern medical advances in many fields are responsible for reduced rates of death and disabling disease and for improved conditions of health, each of which increases life expectancy at all ages (1). One of the most important problems is the rapidly expanding group of aging people. It has been predicted that by 1980, approximately 40 per cent of the population of the United States (that is, 120 million people) will be over the age of 45 years (2). The corresponding number for Europe would be more than 240 million!
