Zusammenfassung
Die Dickdarmschleimhaut entbehrt der Zotten, die der Dünndarm besitzt. Es sind nur Krypten oder Lieberkühnsche Drüsen vorhanden. Die Schleimhaut trägt ein zylindrisches Epithel, das von zahlreichen Becherzellen durchsetzt ist. Diese finden sich sowohl im Oberflächenepithel wie auch in den Krypten, wo ihre Zahl nach der Tiefe hin zunimmt. Die Becherzellen stehen in den Dickdarmkrypten so dicht, daß sie den Charakter des Epithels vollkommen beherrschen. Sie haben eine kelchartige Form mit basal gestelltem Kern. Die Becherzellen sind die Organe der Schleimbildung. Der Beschreibung von Möllendorff (1940) entnehmen wir, daß die Schleimbildung in dem der Oberfläche zugewandten Teil des Plasmas in Gestalt von kugeligen Tropfen beginnt, die sich färberisch als Mucin darstellen lassen.
