Abstract
Trauma is the leading cause of death in persons aged 1 to 44 years and the fourth leading cause of death overall. About 140,000 traumatic deaths occur annually. Sepsis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, and multiple organ system failure are the leading cause of death in trauma patients who survive the initial resuscitation and surgical repair of their injuries.
