Abstract
Critical illness can be associated with low concentrations of thyroid hormones—referred to as the euthyroid sick syndrome. Depressed levels of gonadotrophins have also been noted in critically ill patients. Depending on the population studied and the diagnostic criteria used, adrenal insufficiency may occur in a substantial number of seriously ill patients. In these patients, adrenal insufficiency may result from both decreased production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) as well as decreased responsiveness of the adrenal gland to ACTH.
