The Cellular Components in the Induction of Antibody by x-Irradiated Animals
The germinal centers appear in many mammalian experimental systems to represent primary cellular sites of antibody formation. The capacity to produce specific γ-globulins in response to an antigenic stimulus might, therefore, seem to be determined by the histogenetic capacity to form germinal centers. Accordingly, the immuno-suppressive effect of x-irradiation could be considered as attributable to the inability to elicit germinal center formation following a severe depletion of the lymphoid system. However, studies on the cellular requirements for antibody formation carried out in our laboratory have indicated that germinal center formation is not an essential component of antibody production in x-irradiated mice, whereas functional macrophages may represent a cellular limiting factor in the induction of a primary immune response in animals exposed to sublethal doses of total body irradiation (Gallilyand Feldman, 1966; Gallilyand Feldman, in press; Feldman and Gallily, in press).
