Generalisierte Tendomyopathie (Fibromyalgie)

Summary

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by diffuse pain which usually begins localized at a single site, mostly as early as around an age of 37 years, and develops into generalized pain over the following month or years. Often, organic factors are responsible for the first symptoms of the disease.

The clinical picture with generalized pain is achieved after an average of 7.2 years. The generalisation of pain in men is earlier than in women, and in foreign-workers earlier than in the native Swiss population. In most cases, fibromyalgia is accompanied by vegetative and functional symptoms which can lead to surgery.

It seems that psychological and psychosocial factors are responsible for the generalization of the disease. Therefore, resolution of the conflicting problems can, in some cases, lead to reconstitution. Alternation in the disease course of fibromyalgia with variety in the intensity of pain is seen; episodes are often triggered by psychosocial problems. Beyond the age of 60 years spontaneous remission is often observed, however, the full clinical picture may also occur in advanced age.
